Background
W. Thomas Henry,
AIA, has over twenty years experience in the architecture and planning
professions. Before enlisting in the
United States Air Force, he worked for an architectural firm in the Los Angeles
area and attended Pierce Community College with a major in architecture.
During a portion
of his six-year enlistment, Mr. Henry was assigned to civil engineering where
his background in architecture proved to be invaluable. He gained experience and in-depth knowledge
into the government’s planning procedures, including processing and administration
of construction projects. Along with
many of his assigned duties, he was instrumental in the selection of architects
and engineers for proposed projects and acted as liaison between civilian
employees, military personnel and the private sector.
Upon his
honorable discharge, Mr. Henry continued to pursue his professional career in
architecture in the private sector. He
continues to stay current in his profession by attending seminars and workshops
sponsored by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and the
American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Through a majority of these seminars, independent study and working
closely with a structural engineer, he has developed a strong understanding and
knowledge of structural engineering. He
has worked for a variety of firms in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura
Counties. This has allowed him to
receive vast exposure in architectural design and practices. His involvement with these firms consisted
of being a member of design teams, preparing construction documents, writing
specifications, construction observations, administration of projects with
governmental agencies and coordination with clients, consultants and
contractors. A partial listing of the
projects with which Mr. Henry has been involved are described on the following
pages.
Following the
prairie style of architecture established by Frank Lloyd Wright, Mr. Henry has
developed a reputation for integrating buildings with the surrounding
terrain. This strong influence has led
him to become a student of Feng Shui.
The practice of Feng Shui, meaning wind
and water, is the ancient Chinese practice of the harmonious blending of land
and buildings for proper balance. The more open the design the more dynamic the
spaces, which in turn nurtures the inhabitants. By incorporating Feng Shui into the design of religious
structures, people are drawn to the tranquil, peaceful surroundings.
Mr. Henry’s
belief in community involvement led him to become an active member in the Port
Hueneme chamber of commerce and his ultimate presidency. He continues to be active in the
community. As a community leader, his
efforts have been recognized by a United States Senator, a State Senator, a
State Assemblyman, and the County Board of Supervisors.
